Disney owns almost 20 resort hotels with over 25,000 rooms, this does not include the thousands of off site rooms and vacation homes available.

With that being said I feel that the only place to stay is on site in a Walt Disney World Resort Hotel, staying "off site" is not an option for me.  If you don't think you can afford to stay on site then I would suggest checking out a Value Resort it really isn't that expensive.

By staying on site I can become fully immersed in the vacation experience or bubble if you will.  I can use Disney's free Magical Express to bring me to WDW and then utilize Disney's own transportation system of monorails, busses and boats to take me around the 47 square mile resort area.  I do not need to worry about car rentals, traffic, baggage handling  (except for at my home airport) or driving back to my hotel while tired. Another perk to staying on site is that Disney currently offers its on site guests what is called Extra Magic Hours (EMH).  Certain Theme Parks will open a couple of hours early or stay open a couple of hours late and this is only available to on site guests.

Though I would like to always stay at a deluxe resort my current personal favorite seems to be the moderate resort Port Orleans French Quarter. I like this resort due to the size and theme, it the smallest resort on property and thus seems less crowded and quaint.  My kids like the pool and the boat ride to Downtown Disney is nice.

What resort do I recommend?
I recommend the resort that fits your budget.  What I mean by this is that if you can afford a deluxe resort then that is where you should stay.  However, if a moderate or value resort is in your budget then definitely stay in one of them.

That being said there is however other variables that need to go into the formula for deciding in which resort to stay.

  • If you cannot stay for at least 7 nights then stay in a less expensive resort and extend your stay to at least 7 nights (or save some more money until you can stay at least 7 nights).
  • If you are traveling with children and have the budget then you may want to stay at a monorail resort. This gives the best access to the Magic Kingdom and what kid doesn't love the monorails
  • If you are not traveling with kids then you may want to stay at the Yacht & Beach Club as they give the best access to the Studios & Epcot.

Where "on site" have I stayed?
The Resorts (or hotels) at WDW are separated into 3 main categories and what I will call Others.  I am listing the Disney's Vacation Club (DVC) and the campground here as they are unique to themselves.
